Attention Parents of 3rd through 6th Grade Students:  The testing window for the MSP is April 29th - May 17th. Please work with us to have all appointments take place outside of this testing window.

Glenridge Night at Ivar’s!  Come have dinner at Ivar’s (in Kent) on May 9th. The teachers will be working from 5-7 p.m.   Ivar’s will donate 20% of the sales from that time period to the Glenridge PTO.  Flyers will be sent home before the event.

Kindergarten Registration starts now!  Children who will be age 5 by August 31st are eligible to start Kindergarten this September.  Registration packets are available in the office now. Completed registration packets should be turned into the Glenridge office as soon as possible.

Glenridge loves its Volunteers! We invite all of our volunteers to join us for a celebration in their honor on Friday, May 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Glenridge Library.

The Might Milers  have run 3,128 miles so far this year!  We have 159 students enrolled in the program and many of them have run over 26 miles.  In total, across the country, Mighty Milers runners have totaled 3,370,891 so far this year.  We are the only school in Kent participating and our kids are really doing a fantastic job!

Teacher Appreciation Week

The week of May 6th -10th  is Teacher Appreciation Week.  The dedication, passion, and caring nature of our Glenridge teachers make a difference for your children every day.  Teachers are one of the guiding forces that help our children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults.  Please remember to thank your children’s teachers during this week – your kind words will be appreciated and canmake all the difference in the world.

National School Nurse Day is Wednesday, May 8th.  Please take a moment to say thank you to our school nurse, Arlene McKee, RN, as we celebrate a day late at Glenridge on Thursday, May 10th , due to Mrs. McKee’s schedule. Our Nurse brings compassion and years of training and experience to our school where she helps children manage a large variety of health problems, including chronic and life threatening conditions.

Sixth Grade Parents:  In order to be eligible for interscholastic sports competitions in Middle School during the 2013-2014 school year, student-athletes must submit a properly signed and dated KSD Physical Exam form.  DO NOT get a sports physical before June 1, 2013 or it will not be valid.  For more information see http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/KSD/AT/.  Forms will be available later at the middle schools, the Athletic Department office, and at elementary schools.

6th Grade Meeker Parent Night will be held on May 23, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  This will provide parents with the opportunity to talk to teachers, counselors and administrators, hear about athletic and extracurricular activities at Meeker, and see the campus.

Attention Parents/Guardians of 5th Grade students: There are 2 vaccine requirements.

1) It is a requirement that all students entering 6th grade must have the varicella vaccine or have had the disease of chickenpox.

2) The second vaccine requirement is that all students entering the 6th grade that are age 11 or older must have the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine.  The DTP, DTaP, DT, and Td do not satisfy this requirement.  The vaccine must be specifically the Tdap. Please take your child to your health care provider to get these immunizations prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year. Please bring proof of the immunizations to the school office.  Thank you.

Tip of the Week ~ Test Strategies to Help Students SCORE Big!

Scan the story. Look at the title, pictures, and diagrams.

Carefully read the questions first. Identify your purpose for reading.

Optimize your reading by using your pencil to underline key words and points.

Respond to the questions by looking back in the story for support.

Evaluate your answers. Make sure your answers match the questions and that you have answered all parts of the question.

With the MSP, many parents wonder if there is anything that they can do to help their children succeed.  The answer is yes, there are a couple of things that generally help.  First, make sure that your child gets at least 8 hours of sleep the night before the test.  Second, make sure your child has a good breakfast on testing days; hunger can detract from a good test performance.  Next, encourage your child to listen carefully to all test-taking directions given by the teacher and ask questions about any directions that are unclear.  Finally, talk with your child about the MSP as an opportunity to demonstrate their very best effort and an excellent way to show what they have learned.  If you are looking for more information about the MSP, please visit the following state-sponsored web site: http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/StateTesting/MSP.aspx.

Sincerely,

Scott Abernathy
