Welcome to Room 406!

I am very pleased to have your child in my fourth grade class. We
have a very busy and exciting year in store for us! Before I give
you a short preview of some of the activities planned for the year,
let me introduce myself. I am Jan Williams. I have lived in the
Kent School District for twelve years. Together, my husband
and I are raising two boys. My youngest son attends high school in
the district and my oldest is currently a
senior at Washington State University. This is my second
year at Horizon Elementary and I consider myself fortunate to be
among such a professional faculty.
This year we will study Washington State history, geography, and
government. Using the Foss Science kits, we will explore magnetism
and electricity, earth material, and inventions. We will continue
developing our writing skills using an exciting new curriculum from
the district. Reading is a big part of fourth grade. We have an
extensive classroom library, and I will spend much time working
individually with students. Our math program, Everyday Math, is
full of wonderful games and activities. Math is an enjoyable
subject in fourth grade! One of my goals for the year is to
encourage students to take personal responsibility for assignments.
I provided each student with a planner and I will work with
students to help them record assignments.
Our homework will practice skills learned in school. If your
student misses a homework assignment, I will send a note home.
Together, we can work with your child to help develop good study
habits. It is my goal for your child to have all the skills
necessary to be successful in school.
