Welcome to Ms. Merrifield's 1st grade classroom. It is such a pleasure to have your child in my classroom. We are going to embark on a journey of learning and adventure.

I would like to share some information about myself that might help you to understand my background and philosophy. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Washington in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences with my concentration in Psychology and an Education minor. I went on to earn my Master’s Degree in Teaching along with my Residency Certificate through Heritage University. Currently, I am working on obtaining an English Language Learners endorsement at Heritage and working on my Professional Certification (ProCert).  The professional certificate is the second-tier license for Washington teachers. The professional certificate was implemented to change the state certification system to an evidence-based system and is intended to build the capacity of teachers to provide quality learning opportunities to all students.

I have many years working with children. I worked as a classified employee for Auburn School District for 7 years, certificated in the private sector for 1 year and am on my 4th year here at Horizon. I have had the pleasure to teach Kindergarten, 1st grade and am currently teaching 1st grade Highly Capable (HiCap) students. Regardless of my positions, my unilateral goal has always been to assist students to work towards their empowerment and independence by ascertaining their inner strength and ability so they are able to be independently successful and life-long learners. I have been successful in achieving my goal by providing a stimulating, learning environment that fosters self-confidence, all the while encouraging students to reach their fullest academic and social potential through hard work & perseverance.

I am the mother to three children: Megan (24), Paul (21) and Victoria (19). They are my reason!
