Second Grade All Stars!

Welcome to the new school year of 2018-2019.

Reading: We will begin the year with learning strategies for picking books and building our stamina for reading. Your child should be reading for 30 minutes each night.

Here are some ideas that can help you with your reading skills.

To help with accuracy and fluency:

  • Look at the pictures and see if there are any clues
  • Sound out letters and then put the sounds together
  • Break down the word into parts (chunk it)
  • Skip the word and read on, then come back.
  • Take a running start, read the sentence-Does it make sense?
  • Substitute the word with another word that makes sense.
  • Is it a sight word?
  • Have an adult tell you how they figure out a word they do not know.
  • Read with expression and change voices for the characters.

To help with Comprehension

  • Predict what will happen next.
  • Make connections to events that happened to you, someone else or you heard or read about before.
  • Stop, close eyes and make a picture in your mind.
  • Ask: I wonder why… I wonder what will happen next…
  • Ask: Who, what, where, when, why and how questions.
  • Why do you think this happened? What makes you think that?
  • Which did you like?...why? Do you agree with…why? Would it be better to…? Why?
  • What do you think the author’s purpose was?...why?
  • Make your own questions and research about them.
  • What did the book try to teach me? What did I learn?
  • How did the author prove (supported) his/her point?

Math: We are into our fifth year using Engage New York. A parent information sheet will go home at the beginning of each new math unit!

Writing: Lucy Calkins is our guide by the side. We use this writing program throughout the school year. The best part of Lucy is that we can watch how your child grows as a writer. Many sample writing papers will go home each time we complete our units of study. In second grade we begin our focus with Narrative writing then move to Opinion, Informational and then complete the year with Poetry.
