Welcome to
Northwood Middle School's
Band and Orchestra!

In elementary school you established a foundation for your music education in general music, choir, band or orchestra and you are ready for middle school music!  Here is what you can expect next year as a member of Northwood’s music program:

  • We meet every day for an entire class period (about 55 minutes)
  • We have evening concerts and music assemblies throughout the school year
  • We go on at least one field trip in 7th grade and two field trips in 8th grade
  • You have opportunities to perform in duets and trios with your friends for Solo and Ensemble
  • You get to leave your instrument in the storage area so you don’t have to carry it with you all day
  • If you play a band instrument, there are some more advanced instruments for you to try like oboe, saxophone (if you are recommended by your 6th grade teacher), French horn, baritone and tuba!  Ask your teacher about taking private lessons over the summer if you are thinking about switching instruments.
  • We have a Jazz Choir and Jazz Band that 7th graders are welcome to audition for in September.  Jazz Band instruments are saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass, guitar, drum set or piano.  Information about the audition process for jazz groups will be sent home at the beginning of the school year and is only open to students enrolled in choir, band or orchestra.
  • Yes, you can be in band AND play sports – lots of students participate in both activities!

Being a member of music at Northwood is really fun and a great way to make friends in middle school, be involved at Northwood and become an outstanding musician.  If you have questions about being in band, choir or orchestra that this flyer did not answer, feel free to contact Ms. Lins about choir or Mrs. Kierstead about band or orchestra.  If you didn’t sign up for a music class but you have changed your mind and want to change your schedule, please contact one of our school counselors, Mrs. Bottroff at 253-373-6633 or Mrs. Bennie at 253-373-6631.
